Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is the successor to the parallel SCSI interface and is set to replace this soon. SAS enables faster data transfers and allows more drives to be connected than the parallel SCSI. SAS cables are thinner thanks to the serial transfer.
SAS hard disks have higher transfer rates and shorter access times than SATA drives. In addition, they also feature a second port that permits a redundant connection for maximum failure safety.
SATA and SAS plugs are almost identical. This way SATA drives can be operated on SAS controllers, but not vice-versa.
