Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is the successor to the parallel SCSI interface and is intended to replace it. SAS provides faster data transmission and allows more drives to be connected than parallel SCSI. The SAS cables are thinner thanks to serial data transmission.

Some SAS and SATA plugs are almost identical. This means that SATA drives can be operated on SAS controllers, but not vice-versa.

• Different types of SAS connector:
• SFF-8087 (Mini SAS 4i): internal, up to 4 devices can be connected
• SFF-8088 (Mini SAS): external, up to 4 devices can be connected
• SFF-8484 (Multilane): hi-density connector internal, up to 4 devices can be connected
• SFF-8470 (Infiniband, IB 4X): hi-density connector external, also used internally in some cases, up to 4 devices can be connected
• SFF-8482: internal, also allows SATA hard drives to be connected, max. 1 device can be connected
