Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is the successor to the parallel SCSI interface and is intended to replace it. SAS provides faster data transmission and allows more drives to be connected than parallel SCSI. The SAS cables are thinner thanks to serial data transmission.
Some SAS and SATA plugs are almost identical. This means that SATA drives can be operated on SAS controllers, but not vice-versa.
